ATM 2025: urgent action sought to achieve tourism sustainability goals

DUBAI, November 21, 2024

A report commissioned for Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025 has revealed a worrying gap in achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to tourism. Its findings say that only 15% of these goals are currently on track to be met by 2030.

The report underscores the critical need for accelerated action within the sector to reduce its environmental impact and meet sustainability targets.

With tourism expected to cause a 154% rise in energy consumption, a 152% increase in water use, and a 251% jump in waste generation by 2050, the report highlights the urgent need for systemic change.

The data points to a significant disconnect between consumer interest in sustainable travel and the lack of transparency in available options, as revealed by research from Visa and Oxford Economics.

The whitepaper, titled ‘Exploring the Future of Tourism Technology’, draws on insights from the 2024 ATM Innovation Wall.

This platform allowed industry professionals to propose solutions, including gamified recycling programmes and hyper-personalised travel experiences, all aimed at driving the sector toward more sustainable practices.

The report stresses the importance of collective action, calling for a circular and regenerative tourism model supported by innovative technologies and community-focused approaches.

Nicholas Hall, Founder and CEO of Digital Tourism Think Tank, said: “From managing plastic waste to ensuring tourism benefits local communities, the path forward involves collaboration across the industry.”

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is taking significant steps toward addressing sustainability in tourism.

National strategies such as the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, Saudi Vision 2030, and Qatar National Tourism Strategy 2030 are actively promoting sustainable tourism practices. These efforts were highlighted during the 2024 ATM, which also set the stage for a continued focus on sustainability during the 2025 edition of the event.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “ATM is proud to provide a vital platform for the tourism industry to advance its sustainability goals. Through collaboration and innovation, we can develop region-specific frameworks that integrate environmental, social, and economic dimensions.”

At the 2024 edition, ATM made significant strides in its own sustainability efforts. By introducing measures like fully recyclable carpet and PVC-free signage, and partnering with ‘cleantech’ company Sparklo to promote recycling, ATM diverted 48% of waste from landfill — an increase from just 5% the previous year.

ATM 2025, which will take place from April 28 to May 1, 2025, will continue to showcase initiatives that address sustainability in tourism.

With more than 100,000 visitors expected, the event will emphasise the importance of investing in resource management technologies and fostering cross-industry partnerships to drive a thriving circular economy. - TradeArabia News Service
