$272m upgrade on way for five interchanges

01 June 2011

THE UAE’s Ministry of Public Works is currently renovating five interchanges on Emirates Road between Dubai and Ajman at a cost of Dh1 billion ($272 million), according to local press reports.

Divided into three phases, the project is expected to cut down travel times between Dubai and Ajman via Sharjah to just 10 minutes, the local Khaleej Times newspaper reported.

The work includes adding two more lanes in both directions of the Emirates Road in Sharjah, as well as renovating five existing interchanges: Al Dhaid Interchange, University City Bridge, Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Interchange, Fifth Industrial Intersection (National Paints Roundabout), and Sharjah Ring Road Bridge.

Parsons Overseas is reported to be the project and design manager.

Dr Abdullah Al Nuaimi, undersecretary to the ministry said that the project was being executed as part of the UAE’s 2030 vision and includes the construction of a storm water drainage network around the construction area that would end flooding on the road during rains, according to the report.

Phase One of the project, which began last year at a cost of Dh70 million ($19 million), consisted of enabling work to facilitate the detour of traffic through Maleeha Road and the roads around the schools in the locality, allowing for the main construction work.

Launched last month, Phase Two includes the upgrades at Al Dhaid Interchange, University City Bridge, Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Interchange as well as increasing the number of lanes on Emirates Road.

Phase Three, which is considered the most challening part of the project and is expected to start shortly, will include boosting the capacity of the existing interchanges at the National Paints Roundabout and Sharjah Ring Road Bridge.
As a result of the construction work, the Emirates Road will see major traffic diversions until the project is complete in May 2013, the report added.
