L&T powers ahead with more projects

01 July 2011

MUMBAI-based engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said the power transmission and distribution unit of its construction arm has secured major contracts worth $305.2 million (Rs13.6 billion) in the Gulf region.

The major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) orders comprise a $127.37 million (Rs5.97 billion) contract in Saudi Arabia to L&T’s subsidiary Larsen & Toubro Saudi Arabia, two orders worth $111 million (Rs4.97 billion) from the UAE, a $41.34 million (Rs1.85 billion) deal from Qatar and a $19.44 million (Rs870 million) order for joint venture company L&T (Oman) in Oman.

It includes construction of a 225-km overhead transmission line, 66 km of underground cabling including eight substations and associated cabling works from Saudi Electricity Company for the Haramain High Speed Railway (HHR).

Once completed, this project will feed power to HHR system, which will link Madinah and Makkah via Jeddah. The scope involves complete engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of towers, conductors, insulators, OPGW (optical ground wire), and fittings. The project will be completed in 24 months.

The larger of the two EPC orders from the UAE was placed by Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), valued at $94.30 million (Rs4.22 billion) for the construction of five medium-voltage substations and associated 33 kV cabling works for ADPC’s Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone project, contracted for completion in 18 months.

The development of Khalifa Port project will replace the existing Mina Zayed port by 2012. L&T is currently already executing of three substations including 230 km of 33 kV cabling at Khalifa Port. The other order, valued at $16.76 million (Rs750 million) has been placed by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority for the installation of 132 kV cabling and associated works, to be completed in 11 months.

L&T has secured a breakthrough order worth $41.3 million from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 66 km of 220 kV underground cabling works. This order, part of Kahramaa Phase X, is the first 220-kV cable order for L&T in the country.

In addition, L&T (Oman) has secured a $19.44 million order for the construction of three medium-voltage (MV) substations including the associated 33 kV cabling works from Muscat Electricity Distribution Company, to be completed in nine months.

Last year L&T secured a contract worth $764 million for the construction of the new Salalah International airport, with Omani consortium partner Galfar Engineering and Contracting Company. L&T’s scope of work,  to be completed in 30 months, involves complete design including airside and landside works and construction of a passenger terminal building, air traffic control tower, ancillary buildings with mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The airport will have a capacity to handle two million passengers per year upon completion.

In addition to the airport project, L&T has secured a Dh592 million ($161 million) contract for the construction of Sheikh Khalifa Interchange in Abu Dhabi.
