Cortec Corporation, a leader in eco-friendly corrosion control technologies, says it has completed in record time a major asset preservation project for Dubai Natural Gas Company (Dugas) in co-ordination with its regional distributor, the Kanoo Group.
Dugas, which operates a major natural gas processing facility and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) manufacturing plant located on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, had awarded the contract to the Kanoo Group for preservation of its manufacturing plant in the UAE.
The MTBE plant produces an additive for unleaded gasoline, allowing cleaner, more complete burning, thereby reducing emissions. The plant was shut for an indefinite period due to the shortage of feed supply.
“The Kanoo Group was selected from among serious bidders for the project because of the Cortec’s products strength and superior effectiveness, technical expertise and the techno-commercial offerings,” says a spokesman for Cortec.
Cortec says it partnered with the Kanoo Group to provide the highest quality corrosion protection to the plant through mothballing of gas plants and sulphur recovery unit (SRU) using Cortec’s vapor phase corrosion inhibitors (vpCIs).
The Kanoo Group’s engineers discussed with the customer the risks of corrosion while the plant was down. A series of presentations were made and they offered the customer a complete system of lay-up and mothballing solution for long-term corrosion protection, says the spokesman.
The total mothballing area is estimated to be 80,000 sq m, of which around 30,000 sq m are insulated pipes and columns.
According to the spokesman, the corrosion under insulation (CUI) application was a major challenge but was achieved successfully thanks to Cortec’s custom-engineered, integrated solutions to control corrosion in a variety of applications within the most aggressive corrosive environments, including insulated piping.
“Thanks to Cortec’s high-performance and environmentally-safe products, a skilled team and good project management, the project was completed within seven months, much earlier than planned,” he says.
He says personnel at all levels within the plant appreciated efforts put into the successful completion of the project and expressed satisfaction the way the project was conducted. The Kanoo Group also received an appreciation letter for its efforts since the products and technical support met all of the client’s expectations.
The spokesman says that Cortec’s patented products used in the project conform to Nace Standard RP 0487-2000, Military specification MIL-PRF-3420 and are RoHS compliant.
