Caterpillar has recently unveiled two new robust machines that have been designed to deliver reliable, profitable performance, while ensuring ease and safety of operations.
01 June 2013
CATERPILLAR has introduced its seventh-generation Cat 988 – the new 988K – and the new 986H wheel loader, which has been designed especially for quarry applications.
The 988K was presented for the first time at bauma, the international trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment which was held in Munich, Germany, in April while the 986H was launched in March.
The 988K marks the 50th anniversary of the Cat 988 delivering reliable, profitable performance for worldwide customers. Designed as an optimum loading tool for Cat construction and mining trucks, the 988K features redesigned loader linkage, worldwide engine configurations, drive train modifications, redesigned cab and enhancements in safety and serviceability. It builds on the premium features of previous models to set new standards for customer value, according to a spokesman for Caterpillar.
The loader is expected to be available commercially in August this year, he adds.
The 988K is powered by the Cat C18 Acert engine and is available as a Tier Four Final/Stage IV version (using selective catalytic reduction to control nitrogen-oxide emissions), and as a Tier Two/Stage II version for less regulated regions. Electronic fuel control ensures optimum performance and throttle response, delivering up to 20 per cent greater fuel efficiency, compared with the 988H. Additional fuel savings accrue with the 988K Eco mode (on-demand throttle), engine-idle shutdown system, and engine-idle kickdown/auto-resume system. Greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions significantly reduce the carbon footprint, the spokesman points out.
The patented optimised Z-bar loader linkage replaces the 988H mono-boom design and expands the 988K’s versatility in small quarries and underground applications. The new design, using solid steel lift arms in either a standard or high-lift configuration, reduces machine height at maximum lift yet increases dump clearance. The design also shortens machine length for greater manoeuvrability. The new linkage combines with durable, precisely designed Cat Performance Series buckets to enhance production potential.
Elaborating on the new machine, the spokesman says: “The exclusive Cat impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock-up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times, and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications. The system allows operators to balance rimpull and hydraulic power for optimum loading efficiency, and the automatic retarding control (ARC) system utilises the optional compression brake to maintain desired downhill speeds and reduce service brake wear. Positive flow control implement hydraulics use a variable displacement, electronically controlled pump to precisely apportion oil flow based on control lever movement.
“The all-new operator station features the Cat next-generation vital information management system (VIMS), which provides expanded capabilities, including real-time fuel consumption and fuel efficiency (material loaded per unit of fuel) data, through an interactive touch-screen. In-cab sound levels are considerably reduced to 71.1 dB(A), down from 74.2 dB(A) in the 988H, and the cab temperature control system is automatic and continuously variable. The Cat Comfort III seat features integrated controls for smooth and comfortable operation. Transmission controls, integral with the STIC steering lever, allow convenient travel control.”
For added safety, a remote panel houses a stairway light switch, engine shutdown switch, and lockouts for the transmission and engine starter. A rear-view camera system provides crisp images via the in-cab monitor.
Options for the 988K include the Cat payload control system and Cat detect object detection, which builds on the Cat camera system with radars and in-cab software that warn the operator when an object is detected within the radar coverage area.
Other options include an integrated axle cooling package, ride control, fast-fill fuelling system, automatic lube system, three-spool valve, high-speed oil-change system, LED lighting, cold-start package, and the powerful Cat Product Link telematics system.

Cat 986H
Meanwhile, the Cat 986H, designed especially for quarry applications such as loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks and handling load-and-carry tasks, is a strong, productive machine that is easy to operate and maintain.
With bucket capacities ranging from 5.3 to 6.1 cu m, the 409-horsepower 986H features a power train with proven Cat components, a powerful and efficient load-sensing hydraulic system, heavy-duty frames and loader linkage, and a safe, comfortable operator station. The 986H is engineered to deliver durable performance at a low cost per tonne.
Using solid steel lift arms designed to absorb loading stress, the 986H Z-bar-type loader linkage generates powerful digging and lifting forces and provides excellent visibility to the bucket cutting edge and surrounding work area. Lift arms are available in both standard-lift and high-lift configurations to accommodate a range of haul trucks.
The Cat C15 engine uses reliable mechanically actuated electronic unit injectors that precisely control fuel delivery for optimum performance and economy in all situations. The 4F/3R Cat power-shift transmission has specially heat-treated shafts and gears for superior durability, and electronically controlled, heavy-duty clutch packs deliver smooth, consistent shifts. A variable displacement pump powers the 986H implement hydraulics and delivers only the volume of flow required at the cylinders, resulting in fuel savings and reduced heat.
Intuitive, low-effort controls allow operators to be immediately productive with the 986H, and a programmable lift kickout speeds loading cycles. An angled ladder provides easy access to the cab, and the Cat Comfort Series III seat provides air-suspension, six-way adjustment and optional heat. The cab is pressurised with filtered air, and automatic controls maintain cab temperature. The Cat monitoring system provides a digital readout of critical machine parameters.
For added safety, a roll-over protection system (ROPS) and a falling objects protection system (FOPS) are integral aspects of the cab design. Also, service walkways have non-skid surfaces, and a convenient windshield cleaning platform facilitates access to cab glass.
Equipped with standard linkage, the 986H can four-pass load the Cat 770G truck, rated at 38.6 tonnes. With high-lift linkage, the 986H can five-pass load the 772G, rated at 47.7 tonnes, and six-pass load the 773G, rated at 56 tonnes.
