REYNAERS’ CW 50 curtain-wall façade and roof system has proven itself in the region as a solution that offers architects unlimited creative freedom, while maximising on daylight, says Ali Khalaf, managing director of Reynaers Middle East, the regional office for the Belgian aluminium systems manufacturer.

The system offers 11 individual styles with various outside appearances to meet the requirements of contemporary architecture and any combination of vertical and inclined planes are possible together with the integration of different types of vents. The CW 50 offers technical solutions for the different performance requirements of a façade such as fireproof and high insulating solutions.

Variants of the system include the CW 50-HI (high insulation), CW 50-HL (horizontal lining), CW 50-RA (roof application), CW 50-SC (structural clamped), CW 50-SG (structural glazing), CW 50-SL (slender), CW 50-FP (fireproof), CW 50 Alu on Steel, and CW 50 Swiss Solution.

Bespoke solutions are also offered of the CW 50. For the iconic Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) in Doha, Qatar, for instance, Reynaers provided a CW 50 bespoke solution as well as the CW 50 and CW 50-RA variants, says Khalaf. Other Reynaers system supplied for the project include the CS 59Pa, a system that comprises non-insulated profiles for the construction of elegant aluminium frames, and CS 68, a thermally improved three-chamber system for windows and doors that boasts the optimum combination of high insulation levels and optimal safety.

Providing details of his company’s role on this iconic development, Khalaf says: “Reynaers supplied the solutions required to allow the construction of a transparent extended glass façade with a span of at least 16 m without additional support.

“The façade with aluminium and steel features stainless steel covers on the inside and is reinforced with bespoke façades measuring 650 mm in depth and covering 5,500 sq m. The use of the CW 50 system has allowed the extended curtain-wall to let in the maximum amount of light.”

The company also provided the CW 50-RA for the numerous skylights on the roof to bring in extra daylight into the complex.

The architectural firm Arata Isozaki & Associates was given of a total area of 200,000 sq m for the project. The firm produced three buildings: the convention centre, the exhibition centre, and the multi-storey car-park. The striking four-storey main building has a truly spectacular entrance. The two 250-m-long, curved steel Sidra tree structures supporting the roof are stunning.

The QNCC is situated in Education City, amid faculties of some of the world’s best universities, such as Weill Cornell, Texas A&M, and Georgetown, as well as research and technology institutes like the Sidra Medical and Research Centre, and Qatar Science and Technology Park. It has a sustainable design, and has been built in accordance with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (Leed) gold certification standard.

Jeddah project

Another project where Reynaers has supplied a CW 50 variant is the Prince Khaled Faisal commercial and office building in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The project incorporates the CW 50-HL series of curtain-walling solution, which is an energy-efficient sun-screening variant of the façade system offered by Reynaers.

“The CW-50-HL (Horizontal Lining) is a CQ-50 variant in which a sun screening solution is integrated into our existing curtain-walling solution. This is achieved through the positioning of individual horizontal covering profiles,” says Khalaf.

A rubber or silicone vertical joint is employed. “Combined with a visually-pleasing exterior, this variant focuses on energy efficiency by reducing the amount of direct sunlight entering the facade, thus keeping the internal environment cool and providing energy saving for the building’s residents,” Khalaf adds.

Reynaers offers a wide range of curtain-walls that have been specifically designed to meet the requirements of contemporary architecture, allowing a choice of traditional grid or style and panel systems or for a high-tech modular façade, which allows for very rapid on-site assembly.

Its wide range of curtain-wall façade systems, shading systems, windows and doors form an integral part of the building’s energy management and comfort.

The CW 65-EF, CW 86-EF and the CW 86 EF-CG are the other curtain-wall solutions that cater to the wider variety of technical requirements of any kind of project whether that of large glass surfaces, improved thermal performance, slender profiles or a specific Uf-Value.

Reynaers is a leading European specialist in the development and marketing of innovative and sustainable aluminium solutions for windows, doors, curtain-walling, sliding systems, sun-screening and conservatories. Besides offering an extensive range of standard solutions, the company also develops solutions that are tailored to individual projects. Research, product development and testing are conducted at the Reynaers Institute, which is believed to the sector’s largest private innovation and testing centre, located in Duffel (Belgium). In addition, the company also provides extensive technical support and advice to fabricators, contractors and architects.

Reynaers’ Middle East headquarters was established in Bahrain in 2004 to provide hi-tech aluminium architectural solutions for the growing construction needs in the region.
