Metro station makes headway

01 January 2016

One of the world’s biggest metro stations is rapidly taking shape at Msheireb in Qatar, where three different lines will have an interchange point through which football fans will pass as they move between stadiums during the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

Around 2,000 construction workers at the site are giving shape to the station on the Doha Metro network. The station will be one of 37 completed in the first phase.

Msheireb will be the main interchange station and will be completed as part of the three Doha Metro lines — Red, Green and Gold — delivered in the first phase of the landmark infrastructure project.  Situated at one end of the Gold line, Msheireb station connects passengers to all the proposed stadiums linked by metro sites. Rapid progress is being made in the construction of the station, said Dr Markus Demmler, senior director, Qatar Integrated Railway Project (QIRP), Qatar Rail.

Meanwhile, Qatar Rail has signed a contract with Qatar Cool to provide district cooling services at seven of the Doha Metro Red line stations. A leading provider of district cooling services, Qatar Cool will offer district cooling services at the Pearl and West Bay stations (Legtaifiya, Katara, Al Qassar, Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, West Bay, Corniche and Al Bidda stations).

The deal aims to contribute to cooling services during the summer months starting 2019, the projected operation date of the Doha Metro project (Phase One), said Qatar Rail CEO Saad Ahmed Al Muhannadi.
