Geberit has a trick up its sleeve

Geberit, a European leader in sanitary products, is offering solutions that enable responsible installation of sanitary systems, thus playing a major role in ensuring a building remains safe in the event of a fire incident.

All of Geberit’s installation and piping systems contain certified fire protection solutions, says a spokesman for the company.

“Wherever there are buildings in which people live or work, there is always a risk of a fire breaking out. At these times, reliable and certified fire protection products in sanitary technology installations can prove a valuable asset in efforts to restrict the damage that fires cause,” he says.

He adds a responsible building strategy ensures that top priority is given to restricting the spread of fire. If a fire breaks out in a multi-storey building, for example, it needs to be prevented from encroaching on other sections of the building or higher storeys for as long as possible. This gives residents enough time to find refuge and also means the fire brigade has a better chance of getting the fire under control quickly, the spokesman points out.

Geberit offers fire protection sleeves for pipe diameters between 32 and 200 mm as well as fire protection products such as a floor sealing system for installation ducts, the Duofix fire protection set and Geberit Sanbloc.

“If used in the correct way, these products can play a major role in ensuring a building remains safe,” says the spokesman.

Elaborating on the hazards of poor quality work, he says holes in walls and ceilings as well as installation ducts can favour the spread of fire in a building if they are not closed correctly and in accordance with standards.

“However, Geberit has found a solution. Its fire protection sleeves close the pipe opening in the event of fire and prevent the spread of smoke, fire and heat to other rooms, floors or parts of the building. Combining Geberit discharge pipes with fire protection sleeves results in an exceptionally safe and reliable product even when it comes to fire safety,” the spokesman emphasises.

Furthermore, he says fire protection is only as good as the weakest component. “If elements from various manufacturers are combined, there is a risk of compromises at the interfaces. Compliance with applicable standards and regulations is likewise more difficult. Geberit offers complete systems which enable you to offer your customer a demonstrably high level of safety to prevent the spread of a fire through the drainage pipes,” he adds.

Geberit’s fire protection sleeve RS90 Plus EN can be used in combination with all Geberit drainage systems (high density polyethylene – HDPE, Silent-db20, Silent-PP) and installed in virtually any application. It is a universal all-rounder in fire protection, according to the spokesman.

More pipe dimensions can be processed with fewer versions of the system. This makes material planning and processing easier and more economical. The scope of delivery includes the blue Geberit Silent-db20 insulation hose and concrete screws.

The system makes new installation situations possible. “Even angled ceiling and wall feed-throughs can be quickly, easily and effectively protected against fire spread with the fire protection sleeve RS90 Plus EN,” says the spokesman. “Semi and fully built-in ceiling and wall compartmentalisations are just as easy to realise. Installation in soft firestops in walls and ceilings is also possible.”

The fire protection sleeve RS90 Plus EN from Geberit has successfully passed EN 1366-3 tests and is classified as an EI 90 solution in accordance with EN 13501.
