Siemens said the company, along with consortium partners Orascom Construction and Elsewedy Electric, has completed the world’s largest combined cycle power plant project in Egypt in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
The parties celebrated the commissioning of the combined cycle plant and start of operations at the Beni Suef, Burullus and New Capital plants.
The stations will add a total of 14.4 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity to Egypt’s national grid, enough power to supply up to 40 million people, said Siemens.
A single combined cycle power plant block with a capacity of 1,200 MW typically takes 30 months to construct; for the Egypt megaproject, Siemens in parallel built 12 of these blocks in record time and connected them to the grid, it explained, adding that now, each of the three 4.8-GW power plants has become the largest gas-fired combined cycle plant ever built and operated in the world.
With this milestone. Egypt, Siemens and the consortium partners have set a new world record for delivering 14.4 GW of power in only 27.5 months, said the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
