Work is ongoing on the Riyadh Bus Project, a key carrier for passengers into the city.
Saudi Arabian Public Transport Company (Saptco) and France’s Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP Dev) were awarded the contract to supply, operate and maintain the $4-billion Riyadh Bus Project in November 2014.
The bus network is the main feeder for the Riyadh Metro, and the principal means of transportation within districts of the capital city. It consists of three different types: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) comprising three lines covering 158 km, 19 community lines across 908 km, and 58 feeder lines extending over a total of 824 km.
The bus network is projected to handle about 500,000 passengers per day in 2020, rising to 900,000 per day in full operational mode.
The bus network is comprehensive, with 2,926 bus stations and stops, with four service levels. These include seating areas, advertising screens, ticket machines, audio systems, passenger information screens, six parking locations and four other depots and maintenance centres in the city.
A total of 842 buses will ply the various routes across the city, with capacities of up to 64, 70 and 110 passengers on the feeder, community and BRT lines respectively. They are manufactured to the highest specifications by two German companies, Mercedes-Benz and MAN. Bus designs complement those of the Riyadh Metro trains, and they will use an environment-friendly fuel for the first time in the region. Additionally, the buses will meet the requirements of people with special needs, and will offer wi-fi services for customers.
