Contemporary makes a comeback

What are the trends in interior design for 2019? ANJALI GOEL, CEO of La Sorogeeka Associates (LSA) provides her thoughts.

When decorating one’s home or giving a new-look to certain key areas, one tends to look at what is currently trending to some degree, whatever the inspiration may be.

While 15 years ago, chunky furniture in soft florals occupied pride of place in living rooms, in recent years, minimalistic pieces have taken centrestage. Regardless of taste and influence, you can’t deny the impact of trends on current projects.

So what are the trends in 2019? In 2018, classic pieces reigned but this year will see the rise of contemporary finishes, heavily influenced by modernism. Matte finishes, or absolute matte – as La Sorogeeka Associates (LSA) likes to call it – will be on the increase, creating a style in which the pieces look untouched. There will be a very organic feel to furniture, with even the leafing of gold, silver and other precious metals being tarnished with a matte finish in order keep to its more natural appearance. This will also include marbles being treated with matte finishes and textures to give it a similar raw look.

In terms of colours, the deep shades popular last year will be toned down, with red being replaced with more brick and soft wine hues. Blues will also be preferred in a dust powder blue as also will greys, such as pearl grey. Black and off-white will continue to make an appearance but the new palette of colours will be far more subdued in look, with a more rural aspect and complementing materials and tones in their more natural state.

Overall, interior design will be moving towards being neat, clean, and simple, with a focus on less is more.
