ACI names ME fellowship winner
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has announced the first recipient of the Middle East Fellowship for the 2019-2020 award year.
Nancy Kachouh is a first year PhD student and research assistant in the Civil Engineering Department at the United Arab Emirates University. Her primary research interest is ‘Structural/Material Engineering’ with an emphasis on studying the behaviour of concrete structures made of sustainable construction materials and the use of sustainable composite-based systems to strengthen concrete structures. Her doctoral research is focused on the use of steel-fibre recycled aggregate concrete in sustainable construction.
Funded by the ACI and administered by the ACI Foundation, the Middle East Fellowship is open to graduate students currently attending a university in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE. The winning student receives $10,000 in educational support, full funding to attend two upcoming ACI Conventions, and more.
Athena school to open in September
Athena Private School for Special Education, a new school in Bahrain for children with learning difficulties, will open its doors in September.
Located along King Faisal Highway, the school is built on a 6,000-sq-m area and features over 100 classrooms, play area, as well as lounges. The spacious school can house up to 1,455 students.
Athena welcomes children aged 3 to 5 years for Pre-School, 6 to 9 years for Lower School, 10 to 13 years in Middle School, 14 to 16 years in Upper School, and 16 to 18 for the post-16 phase.
Bahrain bridge work 65pc complete
The revamping of Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa Causeway, which covers a 21-km-long section from Mina Salman to Dry Dock area, is going as per schedule with nearly 65 per cent of the project already completed, said a report.
The project, which is being implemented at an estimated cost of BD330,000 ($871,001) includes asphalt resurfacing and installation of traffic signals to help boost road safety in the area, reported Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.
The project is part of a series of solutions planned to ease the traffic congestions in 13 locations simultaneously, with the implementation of mega road development projects, said the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.
