NMDC wins deal for $1.4bn Abu Dhabi island

National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) has been signed up by the UAE-based Jubail Island Investment Company (JIIC) to carry out marine works at its Dh5-billion ($1.37 billion) island development in Abu Dhabi, which boasts a mix of serviced plots, high-end and mid-range properties, community facilities, an office park, as well as retail and food and beverage (F&B) outlets.

The Jubail Island project, spread over a 400-hectare area, is poised to become Abu Dhabi’s most sought-after residential sanctuary for wellness and nature enthusiasts.

In May this year, JIIC had appointed Gulf Contractors Company to execute enabling works for the island project which is scheduled for completion in January next year. Work on the eight-month-long marine channel package too has started.

Under the Dh50-million ($13.6 million) contract, NMDC will complete over 7 km of widening work besides enhancing existing waterways designed to improve overall waterfront living experience, restoring water circulation to previously stressed mangrove forests and also providing support to the propagation of new forests. The contract also includes the planting of thousands of new mangrove trees.

Once the marine works get completed, it will enhance the natural waterfront surrounding Jubail Island, improving the experience and, most importantly enhancing the island’s environmental biodiversity.

Richard Russell, chief operations officer of Lead Development – the development management firm overseeing Jubail Island, says: “With enabling and marine works having commenced on the island, we are well on track to hand over plots as early as mid-2021. The timely delivery of this showcase project as per the highest construction and environmental standards is our utmost priority.”

Set to feature six villages – Marfa Al Jubail, Nad Al Dhabi, Seef Al Jubail, Ain Al Maha, Souk Al Jubail and Bed’a Al Jubail, Jubail Island is strategically located between Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and Abu Dhabi city, just 10 minutes away from the Abu Dhabi Corniche and a 50-minute drive from Dubai Marina.
