Expo 2020 Countdown

Poland’s tree-like pavilion to take shape

01 January 2020

Poland has broken ground on its country pavilion for the Expo 2020 event, which is being set up under the theme ‘Creativity inspired by nature’.

The tree-like structure, which highlights the large-scale migration of birds from the European nation to the Arab world, has been designed by Warsaw-based architectural studio WXCA. It explores the nation’s diverse global connections, as well as its role as a leading producer of goods.

The Polish pavilion will be the main arena for presentations about the European nation during the event, stated the government-run Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH).

Its participation in the World Expo is a PAIH-strategic project to boost the country’s economic relations with the Middle East, said its President Grazyna Ciurzynska, who was in Dubai for the launch of the pavilion’s construction.

PAIH said the key topics of the exhibition – mobility and sustainable development – will be expanded upon by Poland in three areas: technology, international cooperation and nature.

The pavilion’s architecture refers clearly to the theme of mobility. It creates an open, upwards growing modular structure that invites visitors to relax in the shadow of a large roof and to contemplate the installation floating above the guests’ heads – a kinetic sculpture depicting a flock of flying birds, said a PAIH spokesman.

The wealth of nature, diversity of the landscape and strategic location in the centre of Europe make Poland the most important habitat for European migratory birds, he stated.

According to him, Poland will be represented as a strong centre of co-operation that uses scientific development to offer the world sustainable and eco-friendly technologies inspired by nature.

“What distinguishes us from other pavilions is an extended children’s zone, divided into a zone for toddlers and a workshop zone for older children,” said the spokesman.

“Having regard for the main theme of Expo 2020 – Connecting Minds, Creating the Future – we address our offer also to younger generations, who will create the future of our world,” he added.
