Giant monoblock pool installed in UAE college

01 April 2020

Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ), one of the leading British architectural and design practices based in the UAE, has announced the installation of the region’s largest commercial monoblock concrete swimming pool at Dubai College.

This is the largest commercial pool construction in the UAE for Desert Grove, a swimming pool installation company, which is the exclusive agent in the region for the swimming pool design-and-build French company Marinal, it added.

Cast in one piece, the monoblock design is constructed using galvanised steel panels which are assembled to create a continuous formwork between the walls and the base of the pool, said GAJ.

This one-piece steel reinforcement then enables the concrete to be poured in a single continuous process, making it watertight and reliable. It is also crack resistant and unaffected by the weather, it stated.

Jason Burnside, a partner at GAJ, said the high durability of the monoblock pool, coupled with the low maintenance required, made this installation an obvious choice for the new swimming pool at Dubai College.

“The concrete pour for this type of installation is fast and was completed in just one day ensuring a perfectly homogenous finish to the structure,” he explained.

The swimming pool is a key component of the new sports and performing arts complex development at the college, said the British architectural practice.

The new complex will provide a comprehensive sports facility to include a gym with separate cardio and strength training areas, indoor basketball and netball courts with seating for 528, outdoor multi-use games area (MUGA court), dance and fitness studios.

It will also include a black box drama performance space with seating for 140, drama classrooms, music classrooms as well as music practice areas and a health food café for the students. The new complex is set for completion by July.
