MBR solar complex order for Azelio

Azelio, a Swedish company specialising in thermal energy storage with dispatchable power, has secured its first commercial order for its long-duration energy storage from Dubai-based Alec Energy.

The storage unit will be part of a system in the fourth phase of one of the world’s largest solar parks, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (MBR) Solar Complex in Dubai, said the company.

The MBR Solar Complex is spread over a total area of 77 sq km in Dubai. Noor Energy 1, a company owned by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa), Acwa Power and Silk Road Fund, is currently developing 950 MW of solar energy technology (phase IV) in the solar park.

By 2030, the capacity in the MBR Solar Complex is planned to amount to 5,000 MW.

DIC completes infrastructure work

Dubai Industrial City has announced the completion of major construction and infrastructure projects to help its community keep pace with manufacturing and logistics demand in the UAE.

Two highway extensions to Emirates Road have been completed, giving heavy-tow trucks direct access to the major causeway linking Abu Dhabi with the Northern Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia, said Dubai Industrial City.  By improving the community’s 127-km-long road network, the upgrades enhance mobility for more than 750 partners.

Dubai Industrial City also inaugurated a 14,000-bed worker accommodation village, which brings the total number of beds in the community to more than 56,000.   More than Dh410 million ($112 million) has been invested to develop the two projects.

Barakah unit reaches rated capacity

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that its operating and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah) has successfully achieved 100 per cent of the rated reactor power capacity for Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.

The 100 per cent power means that Unit 1 is generating 1,400 MW of electricity from a single generator connected to the UAE grid. This milestone makes the Unit 1 generator the largest single source of electricity in the country, said Enec in a statement.

This major milestone brings the Barakah plant one step closer to commencing commercial operations, scheduled in early 2021, it added.

Achieving 100 per cent power is one of the final steps of the Power Ascension Testing (PAT) phase of the start-up process for Unit 1.
