Al-Usaimi’s green focus drives further growth

Othman Abdul Rahman Al-Usaimi Holding group (Al-Usaimi Steel Co), a leading steel manufacturer in Saudi Arabia, is putting sustainability at the forefront of its growth strategy. The vertically integrated company is committed to recycling all of its scrap steel and using it to produce new products. This helps to reduce the group’s environmental impact and conserves resources.

“Our focus on sustainability means we ensure that all our scrap steel is recycled in our furnace and reused. In addition, we keenly pursue projects that preserve our resources such as renewable energy schemes,” Ameen Al-Masoudi, Head of Engineers at Al-Usaimi Steel Co, told Gulf Construction.

“We are highly committed to recycling our scrap and wasted steel in line with our focus on sustainability,” he elaborated. “In recent years, this ethos has helped the growth of the company through the establishment of multiple factories that form a supply chain. For instance, the waste from each factory goes to the furnace plant to produce steel billets, which in turn is used as the raw material for our rebar factory. This apart, most of our steel products are used by our latest venture Al-Usaimi Construction Company after being duly treated and protected with coatings or by hot-dip galvanising, which is also done in-house at Al-Usaimi’s plant and workshop.”

Storage and transport of products is facilitated by Al Usaimi’s central warehouse.

Al-Usaimi Steel Co’s strength lies in the variety of steel products and the diversity of sizes it offers, including steel and corrugated sheets, hollow sections such as circular, rectangular and square sections; round, square and flat bars, rebar, and angle bar; and wire mesh. It has more than 50 branches across Saudi Arabia to cater to the entire kingdom. In addition, it has its own transportation company to serve all regional branches and customer requests on time.

The Eastern Province-based company also supports Saudi Arabia’s endeavours in the renewable energy sector by providing lightweight steel works for platforms and superstructures to mount solar panels, he said. Among the recent solar energy projects it has been involved with in the kingdom are design, supply and erection of special custom-made superstructures for the 300 MW Sakaka IPP photovoltaic (PV) solar project developed by Acwa Power.

Al-Masoudi also pointed out that Al-Usaimi Steel takes its quality control assurance policy seriously by updating it regularly, thus demonstrating its commitment to complying with all required standards and authorities.

Al Usaimi provides lightweight steel works for platforms and superstructures to mount solar panels for the renewables sector.

“We take pride in our products, which are ISO9001 and SASO-certified. We have quality control departments in each of our factories that follow the latest standards in testing and inspection for both mechanical properties and chemical composition of the material. Quality standards are also applied in all our processes, right from receiving the raw material, manufacturing and testing until the loading and shipment of final products,” he added.

Storage and transport of its products are handled by Al-Usaimi Logistics and is facilitated by the group’s 120,000-sq-m central warehouse which has a storage capacity of 20,000 tonnes, and comprises six warehouse buildings covering 60,000 sq m and a 60,000-sq-m open yard.

From the central warehouse in the Eastern Province where all Al-Usaimi factories are located, the group’s various products are delivered to its multiple branches as well as to the clients’ sites across Saudi Arabia and the GCC.

Over the past year, the company has carried out several projects for leading clients including Aramco, Ministry of Defense, Royal Commission in Jubail and Yanbu, Acwa Power, among others.
