RFPs issued for Jubail 4 and 6 desalination projects

01 February 2024

Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) has announced that requests for proposals (RFPs) have been issued to the pre-qualified bidders for Jubail 4 and 6 Independent Water Projects (IWP) which boast a total capacity of 600,000 cu m/day.

The projects, which will use reverse osmosis seawater desalination technology, are set for commercial operations in Q3 2027.

The scope of work includes the finance, development, operation and maintenance of the key seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination water project in Jubail Industrial City as well as associated infrastructure and facilities.

The desalination plant will be located 18 km south of Jubail Industrial City, adjacent to the existing plant units (Jubail Phase 1, Jubail Phase 2, Jubail 3A and 3B), in the Eastern Province.

In September last year, SWPC had announced that nine leading utility developers, including two in consortiums, had qualified for the project.

These include: Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa); Acciona Agua; Saudi developer Acwa Power; GS Inima; International Power (Engie); Marubeni Corporation Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq) as well as consortiums of Ajlan & Bros and Rawafid Industrial Company and that of Al Jomaih Energy & Water Company and Sogex Oman.

Meanwhile, Mapa Group, a Turkish conglomerate specialising in the construction, hospitality and renewable energy sectors, said it has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from a consortium led by Saudi-based Vision International Investment Company for the first phase of Juranah Independent Strategic Water Reservoir Project (ISWR-1), a project by SWPC.

SWPC had awarded the contract to Vision International consortium comprising Kuwait-based Gulf Investment Corporation and Abu Dhabi energy group Taqa as partners.

Located in Makkah, Juranah ISWR-1 is a first-of-its-kind project in the kingdom to be developed under a BOOT (build, own, operate, transfer) model.
