Egis secures two key Egypt rail, metro contracts

01 July 2024

Egis, a global leader in infrastructure engineering consulting and operating, has announced that it has secured two key contracts related to Egypt’s rail and metro networks.  The first deal was awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to supervise two new electric high-speed rail (HSR) lines which form part of the 2,000 km network in Egypt. The second contract involves the provision of project implementation unit (PIU) support, contract management, and construction supervision consulting services for a metro line in Alexandria.

The HSR project is being undertaken in collaboration with Systra, a leading French engineering and consultancy group specialising in public transportation and infrastructure, as part of a consortium, said Egis.

The consortium’s scope, which covers the Blue and Red Lines, with a total of 1,325 km and 39 stations, includes design co-ordination, project management, design review and construction supervision services, including the interfaces between the different groups of work, to ensure that the project is completed on time, within cost, and with the highest standard of quality.

Once complete, this state-of-the-art rail network will efficiently carry both passengers and freight linking Cairo to Abo Simbel through Luxor and Aswan for the Blue Line and Safaga to Qena for the Red Line, it stated.

The HSR line aligns with Egypt’s 2030 Vision, MISR2030, emphasising the establishment of a transport system which is integral to sustainable development.

Egis has collaborated with NAT on various rail projects in Egypt, including notable work on Cairo Metro Line’s 2, 3 and 6, as well as the Alexandria Tram.

Meanwhile, the metro line, named Abou Qir Metro, will stretch approximately 22 km from Abo Qir to Misr Station in Alexandria. Furthermore, in partnership with the NAT and Engineering Consultants Group (ECG), the project aims to transform Alexandria’s existing diesel train service into a modern electric metro system to significantly improve energy efficiency and provide a more efficient and sustainable transportation option for Alexandria residents.

Egis will serve as the lead consultant for the project, providing services in several critical areas including PIU support where Egis will assist NAT in effectively managing the project, ensuring all phases are executed as planned, said a company spokesman.

As per the deal, Egis will oversee the contractual aspects of the project, ensuring smooth collaboration between all stakeholders and adherence to contractual obligations; and also provide on-site supervision of the construction activities to guarantee that the project meets the highest quality standards and is delivered on schedule, he stated.
