Excavators

Volvo workhorse excels in tight spots

01 MARCH 2001

Volvo has introduced a new generation of compact excavators which are said to have been built to do as much as possible in the minimal time and in the narrowest places. There are four models, rated from 2.5 to 4.5 tonnes.

''The operational features of the machines have increased due to the new load-sensing hydraulics and a hydraulic offset of the boom,'' says a spokesman for Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE), the Swedish manufacturer. ''The cab is improved and has excellent visibility and low internal noise level. With the new design, access to the hydraulic system and to the engine is easier and simpler.''

The new Volvo compact excavators have two travel speeds. The slow speed provides a good traction force while the high speed shortens travelling time, he says. The boom has a hydraulic offset that makes it possible to reduce the overall dimensions of the machine to work in the narrowest places and alongside a well.

The spokesman continues: ''On the two larger models rating 3.5 and 4.5 tonnes, the offset ram has a balancing valve which locks the ram to prevent it from slipping. It is held in the same chosen position even during long and hard jobs.

''The two bigger machines are also equipped with a new load-sensing circuit to provide more power, smoothness and independence of movement. It is simple and efficient and permits the combination of all the movements of the machine, equipment, forward movement and slewing independently.

''To allow smoother slewing movement and less sudden stopping, the excavators are equipped with the Hydrosensor Valve. This patented device eliminates the hydraulic shocks, which are harmful to the mechanical parts and uncomfortable for the operator.

''The cab is spacious and comfortable. The ventilation has a generous dimensioning of the components to make it particularly, efficient.

''The windscreen is easy to open thinks to two pneumatic rams. And the front bottom window can be removed quickly without tools. The glazed surface on all four sides of the cab is very large to provide the best total visibility all around for the operator. The door can be kept in the open position by a system that is very easily unlocked from both the inside and the outside of the cab.

''The noise level inside is very low since the cab is totally insulated from the engine and the hydraulic compartment. The cab is also mounted on a rubber mounting.

''As on heavier excavators, the centre part of the new chassis is X-shaped to ensure a better distribution of the loads on the side members to give more rigidity and sturdiness. The bottom chassis is longer for higher stability and to reduce ground pressure.

''Safety features like roll over protection structure (ROPS) tip over protection structure (TOPS) and falling objects protection structure (FOPS) provide the best possible safety and protection for the operator.''
