Sharjah firm plays a protective role

Sharjah-based Specialised Industries, which is approaching its silver jubilee year, offers a diverse range of high-quality products to keep structures protected against the elements.

A wide range of construction products ranging from corrosion inhibitors and waterproofing systems through to anti-bacterial/anti-fungal paints are offered by Specialised Industries.

The Sharjah-based firm was founded in 1977 with the aim of supplying the construction industry in the Gulf with innovative high-quality, technically-advanced and cost-effective construction products. To achieve this aim, the company has, over the years, forged alliances with some of the world's leading manufacturers of construction products.

''The ever-improving effectiveness and quality of the company's products and services are based on the company's spirit of innovation which means new products are constantly being introduced,'' says a company spokesman. ''These products are selected for their reliability, proven performance and value for money after careful evaluation of how fit they are for use in the Gulf environment.''

He continues: ''The company not only supplies products but also provides application/installation services where appropriate. Specialised Industries offers a complete service from advice at the design and specification stage to on-site support services during execution and can draw on the extensive technical support of the companies that it represents.''

The products supplied by the company include:

  • DCI-S corrosion inhibitor manufactured by Grace in the US. This is a liquid admixture for use in concrete to provide increased protection to steel reinforcement against corrosion. DCI-S has a proven track record in the US of more than 20 years and has also been used extensively in the Gulf since 1992, the spokesman points out;

  • Ipanex high-performance waterproofing admixture manufactured by IPA Systems in the US. This is a liquid admixture that is used to reduce the permeability of concrete and increase its durability;

  • Xypex concrete waterproofing by crystallisation.

    ''Xypex is applied as a coating to concrete but its advantage lies in its ability to generate crystallisation and become an integral part of the concrete,'' he explains. ''Xypex permanently seals the concrete against water penetration even under extreme hydrostatic pressure'';

  • A wide range of fibres for concrete including synthetic fibres (monofilament and fibrillated polypropylene, nylon) and steel fibres;

  • Formtex controlled permeability formwork (CPF) liner. Formtex removes excess water from the concrete surface leading to a dense, durable and smooth concrete surface that is free of blow holes, the spokesman says;

  • Reval stainless steel rebars that are said to offer exceptional corrosion resistance, being unrivalled for use in critical areas where there is a high risk of corrosion; and

  • Anti-bacterial/anti-fungal paints for use in areas where preserving hygienic environments is critical (such as in hospitals).

    The spokesman says that these products have been used extensively throughout the region in numerous projects, including the following in the UAE: Dusit Dubai, Jebel Ali K2 power station and desalination plant, City Centre Hotel and Residence, and National Bank of Dubai headquarters, all in Dubai; Grand Mosque, Borouge petrochemicals plant, Shaikh Khalifa Emergency Hospital, water reservoir in Abu Dhabi; and Port of Khorfakkan, Sharjah.

    The products have also been used for the Ibn Rushd PTA and aromatics plants in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, the Scientific Centre, Kuwait, Mina Raysut Container Salalah, Oman, Qafac berths, Qatar and the Arab Ship Repair Yard (Asry), Bahrain.
