Atlas Copco powers interchange project

An Atlas Copco compressor is playing a prominent role in clearing the way for a new interchange on Dubai's 'super highway'.

WORK is under way on the first major interchange on Dubai's Shaikh Zayed 'super highway' in a contract worth nearly Dh68 million ($19 million) with the contractor relying on Atlas Copco for its airpower.

The first of seven interchanges on the Shaikh Zayed Road is being redesigned in a bid to alleviate growing traffic congestion.

In a contract awarded by the Dubai Municipality, National Wheel and J&P joint venture has started work on the Al Safa Interchange. All seven interchanges are expected to cost Dh200 million.

Serving the recently completed 'super highway' to Abu Dhabi - the dual four-lane Shaikh Zayed Road - the Al Safa interchange will be enlarged to include dual feeder lanes at all its exits, simplifying and speeding traffic flow.

In demolishing existing bridge and foundations, J&P is relying on an Atlas Copco XAMS445 for all its air requirements. Supplying air at bar 8.6, the XAMS445 provides an actual free air delivery of 26 cu m/min.

Atlas Copco Airpower is part of the Sweden-based Atlas Copco Group which is a leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of electric and pneumatic tools, compressed air equipment and generators, construction and mining equipment and assembly systems. It recently launched a new version of its XAS36 portable compressor replacing the XAS32 and XAS36 models.

The new model offers a wider choice of options including an integral hose reel to improve the ease and safe handling of air lines as well as a tool box. Easy to move and simple to operate, the model is finished with a new type of corrosion-resistant bodywork and claimed to be tough enough to cope with the rigours of daily site utility operations.
