A construction fleet which includes a number of Dynapac pavers and compactors is being utilised on a major road-widening scheme at Ras Al Khoor in Dubai, UAE.

An 8-km-long stretch of highway from downtown Dubai to the Al Futtaim Roundabout at Ras Al Khoor is currently being widened from four lanes to six.

Work is being carried out by a joint venture between Tarmac and Binladin Construction.

Tarmac is responsible for a new overpass across the busy Al Futtaim roundabout, while Binladin is widening the existing road.

The highway expansion is part of an overall scheme to widen the whole of the Dubai- Fujairah highway.

Contractor Binladin is using a Dynapac F121W wheeled paver for all asphalting duties along the project. After a 30-cm sub-base has been compacted, the widened highway has a 12 cm layer of asphalt treated bitumen, an 8 cm layer of binder and finally a 5 cm asphalt-wearing course.

Each new lane is 2.5m wide and the Dynapac F121W is progressing approximately 1 km every week.

The Dynapac F121W has a maximum paving width of 6.5m, a flow through capacity of 500 tonnes/hr and a hopper capacity of 12.5 tonnes.

A fleet of 14 cu m capacity trucks supplies the paver, and usually carries approximately a full load.

Following on behind the paver, the company is using a fleet of Dynapac compactors. Immediately after paving, a Dynapac CC122 vibratory asphalt compactor will complete five or six passes followed by three passes by a Dynapac CP221 pneumatic-tyred roller.

The Dynapac CC122 has an asphalt compaction capacity of up to 650 sq m/hr and according to a site spokesman has proven to be ideal for this project, as its 2,395mm length and 1,280 mm width allow for easy site access and manoeuvrability.

The CC122 has an operating mass of 2,600 kg, a drum width of 1,200 mm and is powered by a 21 kW 2,600 rpm engine.

The CP221 is used for surface sealing after the vibratory compactor has completed its passes. This unit has an operating mass of 7,950 kg and rolling width of 1,820 mm.

Also on site is a Dynapac CA250 vibratory single-drum compactor, which is being used to compact sub-base to a depth of 30 cm.

The CA 250 compactor usually completes at least six passes over the new sub-base. The unit has an operating mass of 10,600 kg, a front module mass of 6,000 kg and a maximum operating mass of 12,050 kg. With a drum width of 2,130 mm, the unit has also proven to be ideal for this project, a Binladin spokesman said.

All of the Dynapac machines were supplied through local Dynapac dealer INMA of Dubai.
