Tallest apartment block to rise in Melbourne

01 April 2000

This Australian city will be home to the world's tallest apartment building with the final design of the Grollo group's Eureka Tower having been approved.

The $500 million, 88-storey giant will soar 300 m - 58 m higher than the Rialto building and equal to the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The project will fill the last vacant site at Riverside Quay, Southbank, to provide the busy precinct with a new mini-city, the developers say.

"We're committed to make Eureka the new Melbourne landmark, as well as an international showcase for Australia's technology and design," developer Daniel Grollo said.

Construction is expected to start this year and be finished by 2003. The tower will contain 463 apartments ranging in price from $300,000 to penthouses costing $3 million.
