SPECIALIST manufacturer Bridgman Doors of the UK has introduced a ballistic door system which can be configured to protect against most commonly-used firearms from handgun and shotgun right up to a Nato rifle round in caliber.
Protection against armed attack is the objective of the system called Bastion suite, says a company spokesman.
The Bridgman Bastion suite is ideal for banks, post offices, stations or any location where the criteria are high security combined with the attractive appearance of a traditional timber door, he says.
The Bastion can also incorporate fire, anti-vandal security, acoustic and remote control specifications in any combination.
The suite is based on two standard thicknesses of door, the 54 mm which has a solid timber core and the 46 mm constructed of energy-absorbing layers.
All doors in the range are designed to meet BS5051 Pt 1 (1988) and are tested to G2/S and G2/586 and to R1-R2 ratings.
"Each steel-reinforced, remarkably lightweight door literally absorbs shock thanks to a special locking system. This secures the door along the full length of a steel strip, which incorporates raised tabs that locate in shock-absorbent slots," continues the spokesman.
Other security features include a patented frame-strengthening keep which screws and bolts right through the structure of the building. Specially-reinforced materials allow the option of glazing, and the door can open inwards or outwards on its patented super-strength hinges, he adds.
"Finishes including veneers, panelling, laminates and polishes mean the Bastion suite can be as attractive as any other door in a building," he says.
