Indamex set to cash in on boom

01 July 2004

Indamex – a UK-based generating set manufacturer, and part of the VibroPower Corporation of Singapore – is all geared to cash on the worldwide boom in orders for diesel generating sets, especially in the Middle East.

Says James Bird, chairman of Indamex: “We have quadrupled our market share in the Middle East and Africa over the last two years and increased the UK manufacturing operation which has led us to a move to larger premises last year. Our new sales team, including experienced new recruits from companies such as Dale and Kohler, combined with a network of 18 new distributors in the Middle East and Africa, is helping to produce these excellent results.”
The Middle East, Africa and the Far East are all producing record orders well above the same period last year, says a company spokesman.
Orders are mainly for the larger size of generating sets, ranging in outputs from 500 to 2,000 kVA, suggesting an increase in power demand from major civil engineering projects, factory and industrial expansions, an increase in the number of multi-storey office premises, and the continuing development of mobile telephone networks, he says.
“Indamex is currently dealing with a greater than 200 per cent increase in orders for the Middle East and Africa compared to last year,” says the spokesman. “This includes a contract for over 170 generating sets ranging in sizes from 100 to 1,000 kVA in a fully-silenced configuration which were air-lifted to meet the demands for short-notice deliveries. The smallest set weighs two tonnes and the largest 12 tonnes.”
“In addition, several 90 kVA sets have been supplied to a plant hire company for use at Bedouin-style traditional weddings held in tents in the desert.
“Orders have also been flowing from Iran, Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, which include a number of generating sets for marine purposes. Ranging in sizes from 80 to 600 kVA, these sets will be installed on oilrig servicing boats and tugs for the Alexandria Ship Yards and The Suez Channel Authority in Egypt.
Singapore-based VibroPower has just won orders in excess of $15 million from China alone owing to a surge in demand for diesel generating sets due to power shortages. “These orders won over a four-week period this year represent 80 per cent of their entire sales for the first six months of 2003,” says the spokesman.
“The power shortage in China had badly affected a large number of small and medium enterprises as many factories are only permitted to operate three days a week. Most of the generators – in the 500 to 2,000 kVA sizes – were delivered this March.
Indamex and VibroPower manufacture gensets between 15 to 2,500 kVA using well-known brands of diesel engine from Cummins, Deutz, MTU, Perkins and Volvo, adds the spokesman.
