Atlas puts out new range of gensets

Atlas Copco has unveiled a new range of QAS generating sets that offers increased power for demanding projects while ensuring superior environmental performance.

Swedish manufacturer of construction equipment Atlas Copco has come up with a new range of QAS generating sets, which it claims has been designed to ensure superior environmental performance – particularly in terms of noise and exhaust emissions and reduced running costs.

The new QAS range of gensets have been designed to meet the demanding needs of the global and national rental companies, events, industry and construction applications and the public utilities sectors, says a company spokesman.
Rated for prime power at 13 to 100 kVA at 50Hz and 15 to 115 kVA at 60 Hz, the new QAS range of sets are available in a package compliant with future European and US exhaust emission legislation, he points out.
He adds: “Cost of ownership is now lower than ever before, thanks to the improved reliability, durability and excellent serviceability of the new QAS range. These core Atlas Copco values now ensure years of trouble-free service.
Atlas Copco’s new QAS range builds on the success of the popular previous ranges of generating sets, which have been serving industry since 1986. The new QAS range has been purpose-built for mobile applications to suit the needs of global and national rental customers, construction companies and public utilities. “Close attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the use of large capacity fuel tanks to the ease of access to controls. The range also comes with an extensive list of options to allow further customisation to suit individual usage,” says the spokesman.

Environment friendly
“The new range, developed to operate without causing disturbance are ideal for all residential areas and are even suitable for use at night in noise-sensitive locations. Excellent noise reduction features have resulted in 'whisper-quiet' packages operating even more silently than will be required by the forthcoming European regulation 2000/14 EC phase II, which comes into force in 2006,” he points out.
“The equipment is housed in an acoustically treated, weatherproofed steel canopy, which is fully bounded to contain all spillages. Exhaust emissions have also been minimised and the engines comply with the latest requirements in Europe and elsewhere including non-road tier II for US applications and TA Luft 4000.”

Built to last
The new Zincor treated canopy design comes with a powder-coated finish, which gives excellent durability and resistance to corrosion. Atlas Copco QAS generating sets therefore look good for longer, helping ensure high residual values, he says.
In addition, the new sets are easy on maintenance as it provides excellent access for servicing, with all serviceable components situated on one side of the set that can be reached through large doors. A removable panel allows for easy cleaning of the radiator.
Atlas Copco's attention to detail even extends to the lockable door handles. These are made from a non-oxidising material and are recessed, with their shape chosen to fit perfectly with the new canopy design, he says.

Designed with the operator in mind
The easily manoeuvrable generating sets come on a robust steel skid that incorporates two forklift slots and tie down points. The skid is now wider than in earlier models to protect the canopy while a forklift is moving the unit. In addition, the new QAS generating sets can also be safely moved by crane as they are well balanced.
Both the control panel and the power cubicle are conveniently located at the rear of the generating set package.
The control panel can be inspected at a glance through a Perspex window, while remaining protected behind a lockable door. The panel houses all the necessary metering, an advanced control module, warning and shutdown protections. An emergency stop is fitted as standard, as is a local/remote start switch.
The power cubicle is easily accessible thanks to its location below the control panel with cable terminations and suitably rated CEE power sockets, each provided with a dedicated circuit breaker.
There is no need for refuelling mid-task, as the standard fuel tank is large enough to ensure at least a full shift of operation at full load. The lockable fuel tank filler is recessed to avoid damage and can be easily reached from outside when the generating set does eventually need filling. Fuel capacity can be further increased by using an optional detachable skid fuel tank, which ensures continuous operation for up to 48 hours at full load.
Other standard features include an adjustable earth leakage relay, a fuel filter water separator and a two-stage heavy-duty air filter.

Greater flexibility
Atlas Copco has ensured that the range can cater for different needs by offering a wide range of options. The extensive selection includes a battery switch, battery charger, coolant heater, electronic speed governor, dual frequency, refinery equipment and external fuel tank connections.
A sturdy trailer – available as an option – has an adjustable tow bar, which fully complies with European legislation and can be supplied with a choice of different towing eyes.
Picking from such a wide range of options allows customers to ensure that their preferred new QAS generating set is perfectly suited to their chosen application, the spokesman says.
