Work on a BD1.13 million ($3 million) expansion at Bahrain International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Sanabis is to be completed by the year-end. The project conveniently links the existing exhibition halls one and two. The main contractor is Projects S A (Construction), which started work in October last year.






The Omani government has decided to carry out a sewage project in Muscat on its own after talks with a private consortium broke down, officials said. "The sewage plant will be wholly financed by Oman after the government failed to agree with the consortium on the rate of return," an official from the consortium said.






Central Bank of Egypt has invited contractors to construct a bank building on a plot of land at Corniche el-Nil Road El Farag in Cairo. The project involves construction of a bank building comprising a three-level basement, a ground floor and nine upper floors to be used partially by the bank and the rest of the building for leasing/selling.






Four leading Bahraini contractors have submitted bids for the construction of a national commemoration monument in Sakhir. The lowest bidder was G P Zachariades whose tender value was BD5.78 million ($15.3 million).






Oman has invited proposals from firms to act as financial and marketing advisor on its plans to develop the Seeb seafront in Muscat into a tourism and commercial area. The project is expected to cost up to $1 billion.






Bechtel, the US firm given the prime contract to rebuild Iraq, will farm out most subcontracts to Iraqi firms, not the thousands of foreign ones clamouring for a share, a company executive has said. Bechtel is determined to hire Iraqi firms to help rebuild the country and might even lend them cash to get the job done.






Lebanese venture Tabet Enterprises has won a contract worth just under BD6 million ($15.9 million) for the construction of sewerage and drainage networks and road duct crossings at the $1 billion Amwaj Islands. The contract is due for completion in April 2004.






Zamil Steel's Structural Steel Business Unit (SSBU) has been awarded the contract for the potline buildings of the Alba Line 5 expansion project  for a value exceeding SR100 million ($26.6 million).  Zamil Steel's scope includes fabrication, supply and erection of structural steel buildings.






JGC awarded Aramco contractRiyadh: Japan's JGC Corp has been awarded a contract by Saudi Aramco for the construction of cogeneration facilities at its Berri Gas Plant near Jubail. This is JGC's first power generation project in the Middle East.
