Bahrain gem institute offers cutting-edge training course

MANAMA, October 14, 2024

A comprehensive training course organised by the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (Danat) enabled participants to gain a better understanding of pearls, with a focus on natural pearls, and the instrumentation used for their identification.

The six-day ‘Pearl Program’, a part of the institute’s ongoing ‘Pearling Courses’ series, also provided extensive hands-on experience in its laboratory, utilising cutting-edge scientific tools and techniques.

The programme fostered a comprehensive approach to pearl studies, encompassing both theoretical and practical elements.

Participants delved into the history of natural pearls, their formation in freshwater and saltwater environments, and the cultivation methods and classification of cultured pearls.

The course also included an introduction to pearl testing methodologies, employing advanced technologies.

Attendees had the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, examining pearl samples from Danat’s collection. They gained practical experience in identifying and differentiating between natural, cultured, and imitation pearls using a wide range of cutting-edge gemmological tools.

The training incorporated advanced scientific devices, including micro-X-ray radiographs, X-ray microtomography, principles of X-ray luminescence, and energy-dispersive X-ray Fluorescence to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of pearl analysis techniques.

At the end of the programme, attendees embarked on an immersive snorkelling expedition led by a certified instructor to one of Bahrain's "Herys" oyster beds, which was followed by an oyster shucking experience.

They visited the historic Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where they gained insights into Bahrain's millennia-old pearling heritage and its contribution to the global natural pearl market from economic and social perspectives.

Noora Jamsheer, CEO of Danat, said: "The 'Pearl Program' constitutes a valuable component of our training initiatives aimed at developing the next generation of pearl and gemstone experts.

“This aligns with our commitment to preserving Bahrain's rich and distinguished pearling heritage.

“At Danat, we believe that a thorough understanding of natural pearl production at every stage will reinforce Bahrain's position as a global leader in the natural pearl market.

“Through this programme, which seamlessly integrates theoretical education with practical laboratory training, we aim to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the dynamic pearl sector and contribute to its continued growth." – TradeArabia News Service
