Expanding Cleveland Clinic London eyes more Gulf patients

LONDON, October 23, 2023

Cleveland Clinic London, which is expanding its comprehensive neurorehabilitation care to include a specialised service for individuals who have lost upper or lower limbs, is eyeing more patients from the Gulf.

With relatively few of centres globally capable of providing such specialised neuro-rehabilitation many of the patients visiting the Cleveland Clinic London for complex care are from overseas, including the Middle East, says Dr Paul Jarman, consultant neurologist.

“We are very used to treating patients from the Gulf region, and we have Arabic language interpreters on site,” says Dr Jarman.

Global Patient Services team
“Our Global Patient Services team is also on hand to oversee and support patients’ care before, during and after their visit. With a thorough understanding of cultural needs, they provide a single point of contact and can schedule appointments, find hotel accommodations, help with transportation services, and coordinate follow-up care in the home country, among other things.”

The service will include plastic and orthopaedic surgeries, selection and bespoke fitting of sophisticated prosthetics, as well as intensive rehabilitation therapies to ensure individuals reach their full recovery potential.

“Our focus is on enhancing patients’ quality of life with this new service,” explains Jarman. “With a team of experts across multiple fields collaborating on each case, we are able to meet patients’ plastic and orthopaedic surgery needs, provide full prosthetic support and deliver all necessary therapies using the latest equipment and robotic solutions, while also meeting the psychological needs of the patients and their families.”

There are many considerations to take into account when choosing a prosthesis, Dr Jarman says, and many patients will have more than one, designed for different functions such as running or aesthetic purposes. “It is also important to make the most appropriate selection from a clinical perspective, and to get the fit just right, so that it is comfortable, performs well and looks pleasing, and our team of surgeons and other experts have extensive experience in this field,” he adds.

Amputee service
The new amputee service is one of many offered by Cleveland Clinic London’s neurorehab unit.  According to Dr Jarman, stroke is the most prevalent diagnosis treated, while other common conditions seen include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

“We are able to treat a diverse range of conditions as we have large, multidisciplinary team, purpose-built facilities that include a dedicated neurosurgical theatre with iMRI, and access to advanced rehabilitation technologies such as exoskeletons,” says Dr Jarman. “With 42 beds, the neuro-rehabilitation unit is one of the largest in the UK’s private healthcare sector, and has two specialised physiotherapy gyms and an ICU.”--TradeArabia News Service
