$130m fake mobiles seized in Dubai

More than 60,000 fake mobiles worth Dh48 million ($130.6 million) were seized from August 9 to 23 by Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), said a report.

The CID’s Anti-Economic Crime Department recorded 45 cases against 45 suspects, Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, assistant to the Dubai Police chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, was quoted as saying in the Gulf News report.

The department had identified several problems that fall under its jurisdiction and planned internal one-month campaigns that will take place, to tackle these problems, it said.

The phones seized looked exactly like the originals, with authentic-looking packaging, including well-known brands such as Samsung and iPhone, said the report.

The undercover police posing as GCC and Asian nationals went to areas where fake phones were allegedly sold and bought some phones that they suspected are fakes, it said.

The phones were checked by experts at Dubai Police, who determined that the phones were copies and not originals and, accordingly, some people were arrested, it added.
