Dubai is toying with the idea of 'gate-less’ borders - a concept which will eliminate long passport control queues by using facial recognition technology to identify people when they arrive at the airport, said a report.

UK-based ObjectTech is working with Dubai’s Immigration and Visas Department to install hi-tech biometric tunnels that will scan passenger's faces as they walk from the plane to baggage reclaim, said a report in The Telegraph.

Using LIDAR technology, the tunnel will take a 3D scan of peoples faces and instantly verify their identity against a digital passport.

The digital passport, created for the system, contains data from the electronic chip on existing e-passports, as well as biometric information such as fingerprints, iris scans and facial recognition, the report said.

ObjectTech's digital passports uses blockchain technology, which ensures that individuals can control who views their information and also choose to add additional details like such as financial information, addresses and location from a mobile device.

The Dubai pilot is expected to start later in the year, it said.
