AROUND 95 per cent of construction work on Phase One of the Jebel Ali Industrial Area bus depot has been completed, while 25 per cent of work has also been completed at Al Ruwiyah bus depot, according to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The Jebel Ali depot will be capable of housing 300 buses. It is fitted with 24 bays to accommodate 36 buses at a time. It also has offices for 50 employees; and residential quarters for 1,200 bus drivers.
The $109-million Al Rawiyah depot is being built in two phases. Phase One includes construction of a bus depot capable of accommodating 295 buses, a maintenance workshop, supply line, and a washing and cleaning bay. Phase Two entails construction of an administration office, drivers’ quarters with a capacity to house 444 drivers, investment buildings over 3,005 sq m containing food courts, shops, and a mosque.
Meanwhile, the RTA has opened new sectors of Phase One of the Al Ittihad Road improvement project for traffic between Dubai and Sharjah. Sectors opened include HQ Tunnel (Galadari) 1 and 2, which serves traffic from Dubai to Sharjah and vice versa.
Part of a comprehensive project undertaken by the RTA in two phases, the first phase extends from Shula Roundabout and passes through HQ Tunnel, while Mulla Plaza Tunnel, while the second phase starts from Shula Roundabout and passes through the airport tunnel along Sheikh Rashid Road up to Al Garhoud Bridge.
These works, which are part of a masterplan to upgrade this vital road to ease traffic flow, started in 2007 at a cost of Dh830 million.
As part of the phased completion of the project, three bridges (2, 3 and 4) were opened last October under Phase One.
This project is of strategic importance as the road is one of the most congested highways in Dubai and is a key arterial road for traffic between Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
