THE Port of Sohar is gearing up into the next important phase of development with the signing of two key contracts to shape up the project. These include a design and engineering contract and an agreement to establish an oil and gas enclave in the 4,500-hectare Freezone Sohar, an important part of the Port of Sohar development.
Mott MacDonald and Co, a leading global multi-disciplinary consultancy firm with a strong presence in the region will execute the contract for design and engineering services, which include masterplanning and infrastructure designs for Freezone Sohar. The company will play a vital role in delivering management, engineering and development consultancy services. The scope of work includes detailing the masterplan, a geotechnical investigation and designing roads and related works.
The contract that was signed in Muscat, Oman, signals the start of installing the required infrastructure for the Phase One of the Freezone Sohar development.
The agreement to establish a 50-hectare oil and gas enclave has been signed with India’s Oil Field Warehouse and Services (OWS). The enclave within the Freezone Sohar will be developed into a hub for oil and gas activities for the entire Middle East and South East Asia including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Through its extensive experience in this field, OWS will seek companies that will erect their facilities for manufacturing, servicing and maintenance or generate business for their oil and gas tools and equipment.
Efforts towards developing the port began in 2002 with an agreement in 2007 calling for developing and managing the freezone Sohar.
