Doosan pumps up articulated trucks

01 November 2011

DOOSAN Infracore Construction Equipment has launched the new DA40 articulated dumptruck (ADT), the first in a new family of Doosan ADTs offering increased engine power and torque, higher payloads, lower fuel consumption, enhanced operator comfort and faster travel speeds.

The new ADTs are optimised for efficient off-road performance. The exceptionally flexible and agile undercarriage, designed to ensure that all six wheels are in permanent contact with the ground, means that Doosan trucks can operate on very rough and soft terrain on construction sites such as road projects and mass excavation hauling as well as in mining and quarrying applications, according to a company spokesman.

“The new articulated dumptrucks complement Doosan’s wide range of excavators and wheel loaders, allowing Doosan to offer a one-stop solution for equipment to excavate, load and transport all types of materials,” he says.

The DA40 is powered by the six-cylinder Scania DC13 Tier II diesel engine with a gross power output of 368 kW (500 hp) at 2,100 rpm, offering a 10 per cent increase in engine power compared to the previous MT41 model.

“With a 22 per cent increase in gross torque to 2,373 Nm (1,750 lb ft) at 1,300 rpm, the torque available in the DA40 is ‘best in class’ in the ADT market,” the spokesman claims.

In addition, the new ZF transmission offers eight forward and four reverse speeds with a higher top speed of 58 kmph while contributing to the overall eight per cent reduction in fuel consumption. The new transmission improves the transfer of power from the engine to the wheels for outstanding traction. To withstand the increased power, the driveline dimensions and cooling capacity of the truck have also been increased.

Its permanent six-wheel drive distributes power equally while the free-swinging rear tandem bogie and the special articulation system offer excellent driving performance in difficult terrain, says the spokesman.

The sloping body design enhances the stability of the truck, thanks to its low centre of gravity and allows fast and easy tipping, even in the most demanding conditions.

The DA40 also has an increased body capacity of 24.4 cu m, and the payload has been boosted to 40 tonnes without tailgate, an increase of more than 15 per cent over the payload of the MT41. To handle this increased payload, the ADT has a completely new hydro-gas front suspension, a unique feature of the Doosan ADT allowing for free movement on one side, without movement on the opposite side, providing maximum ground contact and shock absorption, he says.
“The higher speeds and payloads will allow the customer to increase profits from their mining, quarrying or earthmoving operations,” the spokesman points out.

Meanwhile, the articulation hinge is positioned behind the turning ring to provide equal weight distribution even during maximum turning and ensure maximum contact between the front wheels and the ground for optimum traction.

Like all Doosan ADTs, the DA40 features a powerful engine brake and hydraulic transmission retarder as standard. The wet brakes offer a long service life and sealed protection from the environment and, with oil-cooled multiple disc brakes on all the wheels, the safety of the operator is never compromised, the spokesman points out.

The DA40 was built with operator comfort in mind and has a new cab providing more space and improved visibility, and a fully-automatic climate control system. For easier operation, Doosan has introduced new electronic systems and simplified fingertip controls with a digital display of all desired machine functions.
