Spotlight on energy sharing

THE GCCIA Second Regional Power Trade Forum held in May (28 and 29) put the spotlight on the development, challenges and potential of the exchange and trading of utilities and energy among GCC countries.

The GCCIA – the GCC Interconnection Authority – heard that the four-year-old GCC electricity network, which began operations in mid-2009, has achieved its primary objective of increasing cross-border electricity supply.

The consolidated electricity network linking the Gulf states, according to the Gulf authority, has helped share the Gulf’s electricity reserves and acts as a catalyst to exchange energy whenever required during emergencies in any Gulf state.

Speakers at the event, held at the Westin Hotel in Dubai, UAE, underlined the significance of the exchange and trade of energy between Gulf states and other countries in the region as well as with Europe, pointing out that the difference in peak-time electricity loads in Europe and the Gulf offered huge potential for exchange and transfer of power.
