Reaching new highs

01 November 2014

Terex Aerial Work Platforms, a business segment of Terex Corporation, will be showing its next generation of Genie booms, scissors, telehandlers and portable material lifts at this year’s Big 5 show.

The machines will be showcased at its stand in the PMV Live area, where its team members will be at hand for all four days of the show, says a company spokesman.

They include the company’s tallest boom, the Genie SX-180; the new generation of scissor lifts represented by the Genie GS-4069DC and its bestselling slab scissor, the GS-1932; the Genie Telehandler, the GTH-4018R; as well as its portable material and vertical lifts, the Genie AWP-25SAC and SLA 20.

GENIE SX-180 BOOM

Genie’s new next-generation telescopic boom, the SX-180, is claimed to go higher than any other self-propelled boom lift in the world. It was unveiled in the UAE this summer and is designed to be productive, reliable and easy to transport; and has been designed with extensive feedback from the company’s customers.

Visitors at The Big 5 will be able to compare the super boom lift’s working envelope with the Genie ZX-135 articulating boom lift and Genie S-125 telescopic boom lift – the next highest reaching models in the company’s product portfolio.

“Customers are always looking for new and innovative ways to carry out their work more efficiently and more effectively,” says Sharbel Kordahi, Terex Middle East’s general manager.

“In concert with customer input, our engineers have been able to reach new heights for this next generation of Genie telescopic boom lift. We have pushed the limits of innovation in the aerial industry by successfully producing results beyond expectations.”

Designed to meet the needs of today’s challenging industrial, construction and maintenance sectors, the Genie SX-180 boom lift provides a maximum working height of 56.85 m – the equivalent of nearly 20 floors, and a maximum horizontal reach of 24.4 m capable of spanning the length of a tennis court.

Delivering 3.2 million cu ft of platform working area, the Genie SX-180 boom lift provides the flexibility required to handle a wide range of extreme tasks currently inaccessible by other lifting and access equipment, he says. The 2.44 m by 0.91 m platform has an unrestricted capacity of 340 kg.

“The 3.05-m rotating jib positions workers and gear exactly where they are needed,” says Kordahi.

The boom is said to telescope out to its maximum height, or back to its fully retracted position, in just five minutes.

The machine is designed to be driven at full height. Travel speeds vary based on boom position and range from 4.02 kmph with the boom in the stowed position, 0.65 kmph below 38.1 m and 0.17 kmph above 38.1 m.

The newly designed X-chassis extends and retracts to provide both stability on the job and a narrow profile for transport. The boom lift’s stowed dimensions are 3.05 m in height and 2.5 m wide. With a stowed length of 12.98 m, the 24,494 kg machine can be easily transported on a truck.

“This X-chassis design is also used on our new Genie ZX-135 articulating boom introduced earlier this year,” says Kordahi. “This allows our big booms to share many design features, providing parts and operating commonality.”

The Genie SX-180 is designed with reliability and serviceability in mind. There is easy access to important systems and components, robust hose and harness routings and access to slew bearing bolts from topside. The rotating jib offers a robust slew bearing and worm drive arrangement.

New platform controls consist of toggle switches and fully proportional jib and boom controls. The ground controls offer an updated function diagram layout and tactile membrane switches. Customers may choose from either a Deutz or Perkins engine. A 50-gallon fuel tank for longer run time and a 7.5 kW generator are standard equipment.

NEXT-GEN SCISSORS

Another recent addition to the Genie range of products is the Genie GS-4069 DC, a 14-m electric scissor lift. It has been designed to meet the needs of indoor and outdoor construction jobs. The GS-69 DC series brings rough-terrain ability and full-height driving capability to the electric drive scissor market.

The innovative approach sees the adoption of its highly-efficient and zero emission AC drive system to rough-terrain scissor lifts, thanks to a patented full-time oscillating axle. The combination not only cuts fuel bills and emissions, it also gives the new scissor lifts their rough-terrain ability, the power to tackle 35 per cent gradients and the stability that allows driving with the platform elevated to their full height.

The three new models of the Genie GS-69 DC series have working heights of 9.9 m, 12 m and 14.2 m, and they are capable of driving through dirt, sand and mud and are equipped as standard with the patented full-time oscillating axle that automatically adjusts the axle position to match the ground conditions, regardless of the scissor’s elevation.

TELEHANDLERS

The Genie GTH-4018R model has a maximum height of 17.54 m, maximum lift capacity of 4,000 kg and can lift up to 500 kg at a maximum forward reach of 15.53 m. With an excellent lifting capacity and horizontal reach, this model is suitable for many applications and can lift substantial loads such as steel, masonry, and bricks around the worksite. There are a wide number of options available, with the choice of adding attachments according to working needs, making this machine an excellent value for the money, says a spokesman for the company.

“The Genie GTH-4018R is user-friendly. Its simple display panels show all parameters at a glance and the integrated control system is very easy to use. A multifunctional five-by-one joystick includes a turret rotation function, putting fast, precise positioning at the operator’s fingertips,” he adds.

Manufactured in Perugia, Italy, the GTH-4018R telehandler is available throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Russia, South America, Asia and Australia.

Genie can be visited at Stand OS-70 in the PMV Live area at The Big 5.
