Qatar Kentz, a unit of Canadian construction group SNC Lavlin, has won a $125-million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Qatargas to build a water recycling facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City, located 80 km north of Doha.
Besides the EPC contract, Qatar Kentz will also help in commissioning the facility. The unit at the Laffan Refinery 2, which is under construction, has been designed to handle the “treated industrial water” from Laffan Refinery 1 currently in operation, it stated.
The project is aimed at reducing the water consumption of these two plants and eliminating the discharge of treated industrial water. Qatargas plans to reuse the recycled water in the Laffan Refineries 1 and 2 as boiler feed water and cooling water.
A joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, Total, Idemitsu, Cosmo, Marubeni and Mitsui, Laffan Refinery 2 is expected to start operations by the end of next year.
