Belgium breaks ground on country pavilion

01 October 2019

Belgium has broken ground on its ark-inspired country pavilion for the upcoming Expo 2020 event in Dubai.

Located in the heart of Mobility District, Belgium’s country pavilion will draw on renewable resources to feed its energy needs.

Covered in lush greenery, the building will feature natural light and ventilation, renewable energies and the smart use of water.

An exhibition trail, shops selling Belgian souvenirs, a business centre and places to taste the country’s culinary specialties will also feature.

Visitors to the Belgium Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will experience the best of Belgian creativity. It has been designed to produce more energy than it consumes, said senior Belgian officials at the ground-breaking ceremony.

“Being part of the Expo 2020 family gives Belgium renewed energy,” said Vercauteren Drubbel, commissioner general for international exhibitions, who was in Dubai as part of a wider Belgium delegation that included the ambassador of Belgium to the UAE Peter Claes.

“There is no better way to turn a good idea into real progress for millions of people,” stated Drubbel.

He indicated that mobility in the future will be differently from what we know it today. “The Belgium pavilion will enable visitors to experience what our most creative inventors have in mind,” he added.

Najeeb Mohammed Al Ali, executive director, Expo 2020 Dubai Bureau, said: “With its self-built country pavilion, Belgium will be able to showcase its latest innovations in bringing people, goods and ideas together – offering visitors a glimpse into the Belgium of the future. “

“While located in the Mobility District, the Belgium Pavilion also boasts impressive green credentials – in line with Expo 2020’s key sub-theme of Sustainability,” stated Ali.

“We look forward to the Belgium Pavilion’s impressive designs coming to life over the coming year as we approach our 20 October 2020 opening date,” he added.
