Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (Gaca) has started trial operations at the new terminal of Arar airport, which late last month received the first flights from Riyadh, operated by national carrier Saudi Arabian Airlines.

The airport will eventually receive flights from more destinations in the coming weeks through Saudi Arabian Airlines from Riyadh and Jeddah, also flynas will be operating flights from Dammam.

Gaca president Abdulhadi Al Mansouri indicated that the new Arar airport can accommodate more than 1,039,000 passengers and handle 10,000-plus flights per annum. The new airport marks a major upgrade of air transport facilities in the northern border region, providing the best technologies and services that will in turn improve the whole traveller experience.

The new airport boasts 10 check-in counters, six travel gates and two passenger bridge gates in the new terminal that can accommodate four planes at one time. There are also four gates that serve airplanes parked airside. Furthermore, the main terminal at the new Arar Airport has an advanced baggage handling system with two conveyor belts. It has 12 passport control counters in the arrival area and eight counters for the departures. The passenger terminal is also equipped with 900 seats.

Gaca stated the new Arar Airport project is in line with its goal to improve and provide all services needed for people with disabilities including mobile paths to special service counters, whether in the security zone or the check-in area.

Gaca is also working to develop a network of modern international and domestic airports to accommodate the growing number of travellers.
