Limak marks milestone at Kuwait airport

Leading Turkish builder Limak has achieved a key milestone with the successful completion of the fabrication of 807 precast arch elements required for the inner roof of the new terminal at Kuwait International Airport.

Constructed and assembled by Limak, the complex structure’s design was undertaken by Germany-based firm Werner Sobek. Robert Bird Group, a member of one of the largest Asia-based urban, industrial and infrastructure consulting firms, is part of the project along with Surbana Jurong Group, which handled the roof’s construction methodology.

According to Limak Construction, a part of leading Turkish conglomerate Limak Group, the project requires more than 1 million cu m of concrete and over 200,000 tonnes of structural steel, which was procured locally. Following the installation of the precast arches, work is ongoing on the post-tensioning and diaphragm slabs at the site. Precast installation is targeted to be completed ahead of schedule, it states.

Work on the terminal’s columns is in full swing, attaining 59 per cent completion, while the floor slab works (44 per cent) are ongoing along with shell cassette fabrication. The concreting work is nearly 47 per cent complete, while the shell cassette installation is ongoing.

Limak says with this move, nearly 95 per cent of the arches have been installed till date, while 85 per cent of the project’s concrete quantity – around 1,002,720 cu m – has already been poured.

Celebrating the key milestone at a ceremony held at Kuwait International Airport’s new Terminal Two construction site, Limak said the project – which is being built at an estimated cost of KD1.312 billion ($4.3 billion) – was now 25.6 per cent complete.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Robert Bird Group and Surbana Jurong Group.

During the event, Limak İnşaat Kuwait project director Richard Meredith unveiled the details of the company’s extensive operations and the successful process of completing the precast arch elements and the substantial installation rate.

On the key milestone, Meredith said: “We are proud to be here with our solution providers at the Robert Bird Group who have played an extensive and important role in helping us complete the precast arch elements in support of the unique Kuwait terminal roof.”

“Erection is well advanced and over 95 per cent have been installed. The shell cassette fabrication is nearly 50 per cent complete and installation has commenced,” he added.

The new passenger terminal will have the initial capacity to handle 25 million passengers per year and accommodate all aircraft types through 51 gates and stands. It has set a target to become one of the first airport terminals in the world to achieve Leed Gold certification for energy and environmental design.
