Safety first for UAE ethylene plant

With the increasing industrialisation of the region, facilities producing highly flammable materials demand the highest fire safety standards. Sterling Fluid Systems, a UK-based manufacturer of fire pump sets, claims it is geared to meet these needs.

Fire pump sets from Sterling Fluid Systems, a world leader in approved fixed fire pumps, are ensuring the highest fire safety standards at Abu Dhabi Polymers' (Borouge) new ethylene plant in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, UAE, says their UK-based manufacturer.

''Ethylene is a highly flammable chemical. It is stored at a temperature of minus 100 deg C,'' says a spokesman for the company. ''Fire protection systems installed at the plant had to comply with exceptionally stringent safety standards, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) requirements.

''To meet these rigorous specifications, Sterling supplied three horizontal split-case diesel pumps and one horizontal, split-case electric pump which are designed to supply water quickly and efficiently to sprinkler systems throughout the infrastructure of the new plant. Sterling also supplied two jockey pump sets.''

The fire protection equipment was supplied to the main contractor for the project, ABL - an alliance between Linde and Eastern Bechtel.

Sterling, which claims to be a world's leader in the supply of diesel and electric pump sets and associated electrical control equipment for fixed fire protection systems, says its pumps and controllers are specifically designed to comply fully with all different fire regulations in force around the world.
