Work on the new Formula One race track is expected to start in early November.
Tenders for the project to build the track have been opened and bids of 10 companies are being considered for the $75 million (BD28.3 million) contract. Officials anticipate it will take around two months to reach a decision before the deal is awarded.
The 16-month project in Sakhir is expected to be completed in March 2004.
Bahrain signed the historic deal to become the first country in the Middle East to stage a Formula One event last month. It fought off competition from a host of other countries to land one of the world's most prestigious events from 2004. The deal was signed at the Italian Grand Prix and marked the end of two years of intense preparations.
Although the course was just one factor which sold the country to Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, it was no doubt the clincher, according to project manager Gordon Calder.
The Bahrain Racing Circuit, designed by German consultant Tilke, will be the first purpose-built track of its kind in the Middle East.
"We think the circuit will be the best and most advanced in the world," said Calder. "It has been designed from the racing point of view, the spectators' point of view and the safety point of view. This will be state of the art."
