Laser Tool Makes Marking a Breeze

01 September 2003

Hilti has launched a  revolutionary marking tool called the Hilti PM 24, which is a robust pocket-sized laser tool boasting a range of uses in modern construction, including the installation of partitions.

The multi-directional laser tool is said to make levelling, plumbing, setting out right angles or transferring points easy and less time-consuming.

'To install dry-wall partitions in offices and open spaces, metal channels for the partitions have to be set out at right angles,'' explains Steve Kim, product manager at Hilti's regional office in Dubai, UAE.  ''The position of a main wall is marked first. And this is done by measuring and marking out the intervals along the reference line using a measuring tape. These operations are repeated several times over the entire length at the room until the main wall has been marked out, a time-consuming job.''

'But with the Hilti laser tool, a job of this kind can be done more quickly and accurately. The Hilti PM 24 allows marking out right angles quickly, precisely and easily at a touch of a button.''

The laser tool (PM10 or PM 24) is placed at a planned position of a partition wall with the lateral beam aligned along the main floor channel. The beam immediately in front of a tool is projected at a precise right angle to the main wall. The channels can be laid out along this laser beam and then fastened in place.

A simple six-step guide follows, as outlined in the diagrams:
1) Place the Hilti's multi-directional laser tool PM 10 (three beams) or PM 24 (four beams) along the reference wall at the desired length of the partition (Y)  and adjust it to hit the target plate right in the middle with the front beam.
2) Measure the width distance (X1, X2) for the rooms by using the right angle beam and the target plate to mark the exact position.
3) Place the drywall track on the first mark. Mount the PM 24 on the PA 271 drywall adapter.
4) Place the PM 24 over the first mark (X1) and target the Y mark with the front beam
5) Align the floor channel with the target plate using the 90-degree angle beam.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 for other walls.
The PM 24 multi-directional laser projects two horizontal laser beams at 90 degrees to each other, a third beam vertically upwards and a fourth reference beam vertically downwards.

'Irrespective of whether the marking has to be done horizontally or vertically, these four easily-visible laser beams help to save time,'' says Kim. ''Jobs, which previously required two persons using conventional methods, can now be done by a single person in a fraction of time.''
