$780m Oman STP gets go-ahead

01 November 2003

An agreement has been signed for the RO300 million ($780 million) modernisation of the Darsait Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) covering the Muscat Governorate.

The project will be implemented in phases over a 10-year period by the Oman Wastewater Services Company (OWSC) and the Bahwan Contracting Company (BCC) will execute the project.

The deal was signed by Abdullah bin Abbas bin Ahmed, president of Muscat Municipality and chairman of the founding committee of OWSC and BCC general manager- corporate C K Khanna. The contract represented a milestone in the development of a modern sewerage network in Muscat, said Abdullah.

As part of its contract, BCC will refurbish the existing 14,000 cu m capacity Darsait STP with a view to eventually augment its capacity to 21,000 cu m. Modern equipment will replace the present machinery.

The upgrade, covering electrical, civil, mechanical and instrumentation works, will be completed in January 2005, a report said.

As part of the Phase 1 work of the project, OWSC is overseeing the detailed design of the Bausher area sewerage collection network, as well as a new sewage treatment plant at Al Ansaab. Both initiatives will ensure network coverage to Qurum, Madinat Al Ilam, Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos, Al Ghubrah, Al Khuwair and Al Athaiba.
A separate project will cover Seeb and other areas.
