01 November 2003

Saudi Arabia-based Arabian International Company for Steel Structures (AIC) has won a BD3.3 million ($8.77 million) contract as part of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba's) Potline 5 expansion project.

The contract, which calls for the construction of an anode baking furnace and an anode storage building steel works, is to be carried out on a turnkey basis at the Alba smelter site in Bahrain. The project contractor is expected to mobilise the contract requirements this month. Work on the project is expected to be completed by 2004, according to Ahmed Nizam, marketing executive for the contracting company.

Alba's expansion project will involve the construction of Potline 5 and associated ancillary facilities to provide for an additional 250,000 tonnes (nominal) of primary aluminium production capacity based on 336 pots.

Alba has appointed Bechtel Corporation of the US as its EPC (engineering procurement and construction) contractor for the smelter portion of the line 5 project in January 2003.
Bechtel will manage the various contracts and procurements of the line five smelter and meet the programme and budget targets.
