Construction work is set to begin this month on a new steel coil centre being set up by Sumitomo Corporation in Dubai, UAE. The facility is scheduled to start operating by the end of 2005.
Demand for steel is on the rise in the Middle East, for use in building construction and electrical appliances, which Sumitomo estimates to be around 550,000 tonnes per year.
The 3,000 sq m facility - will be built on a 15,000 sq m site inside an industrial park in Jebel Ali - which will be able to process 60,000 tonnes of steel per year,
Some equipment from Sumitomo’s other coil centres in Asia and North America will be moved to Dubai to keep the costs down.
Summit Steel (Middle East) – Sumitomo’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Dubai which currently imports steel materials – will be transformed into a new company capable of processing steel, with an initial work force of about 30 employees.
