Dubai Maritime City makes rapid progress

01 December 2006

Infrastructure works have commenced on the Dubai Maritime City – the largest and the most comprehensive maritime complex in the world – marking one of the strategic stages in the development of the iconic city.

The scope of the infrastructure works comprises three components – civil, electrical and mechanical works. Once complete, development will not only pave the way for a major impetus to the global maritime trade but also comprehensively redefine the international maritime community.
This phase of the civil works will encompass more than 240,000 cu m of concrete and 39,462 m of steel rails which will allow the operation of a total area of 67,805 sq m for transfer pits and 144,579 sq m of dry berths. The works will also include hard and soft landscaping, gravel infill and block paving. As part of the electrical works, the focus will be on high voltage and low voltage wiring, street lighting and telecommunication duct banks while the mechanical works will involve installation of the water supply network, irrigation, sewerage and fire fighting devices.
“This development will provide the core elements of infrastructure required by key marine and maritime-related industries and services in one location that will perfectly complement Dubai’s existing shipping operations,” says project manager Amer Ali. “The steady progress on this front further reiterates our commitment to complete the project within the stipulated schedule.”
He adds: “Dubai Maritime City is taking rapid strides to accomplish this unique concept which is set to far outstrip expectations. We are in the process of setting up a world-class infrastructure to ensure effective and efficient methods of operation. Once complete, the city will be able to give our existing and new members vastly improved services and the best facilities.”

Industrial workshops
Meanwhile, construction of industrial workshops and warehouses has also begun  on the project.
Several industrial workshops and warehouses will be constructed, which will form a vital part of the relocation of Jadaf Dubai to the Maritime City. Jadaf Dubai – one of the oldest ship repair yards in the Arabian Gulf, which is currently located at Dubai Creek – will be relocated in the industrial section of the city, occupying just under half of its 2.4 million sq m total area.
The construction assumes increased significance as it marks the rapid progress in the development of this dynamic development, which is expected to provide a major impetus to regional maritime trade.
Dubai Maritime City is also going full steam ahead with setting up the new shiplift facilities. Construction of the support structures for the new facilities is currently under way.
The multi-purpose industrial warehouses and workshops constructed will offer a wide range of facilities and spaces for the maritime industry. The constructed buildings will adhere to the highest fire safety standards as set by the universally acknowledged National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Additionally, the warehouses will also provide security against weather related damage. Detailed project planning and research, coupled with the most efficient methods of construction, are being undertaken to ensure that the maritime related companies have access to state-of-the-art facilities including road networks created especially for industrial and maritime use.
When completed, Dubai Maritime City will be the world’s biggest and the most comprehensive maritime complex spread across 227 hectares of man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and Dubai Dry Docks, and will be surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.
