Air France staff strike hits five-day mark

PARIS, April 8, 2018

Hundreds of Air France flights were cancelled on Saturday as pilots, cabin crew and ground staff continued with their wage strike for a fifth day, said a report.

The strike, aimed at securing higher pay, affected international and domestic travel, with a quarter of long-haul flights cancelled, said a report in France 24.

Around a third of medium-haul flights to and from Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport did not take off.

Thirty per cent of short-haul flights were cancelled to and from Paris' Orly airport and French regions.

Saturday saw the highest cancellation rate since unions called for the daylong work stoppages in February in pursuit of a six per cent pay raise. Air France management estimated 34 per cent of pilots walked out, 26 per cent of crew and 19 per cent of ground staff.

Management's offer of a one percent raise this year has been rejected, the report said.

Unions have already warned of more strikes to come, with six more days of walkouts planned including two this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
