VISITORS and exhibitors thronged the New Doha International Exhibition Centre last month (April 27 to 30) to attend Project Qatar 2009.
Billed as one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the region, the sixth edition featured a record 900-plus list of construction industry companies from about 20 countries.
Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, inaugurated the four-day exhibition in the presence of local, regional and international entrepreneurs.
The premier said the exhibition is part of initiatives being taken by Qatar to promote trade at a time when the world is experiencing an economic meltdown.
Companies representing the construction technology, building materials, equipment and environment technology sectors had their pavilions at the venue, which was supplemented with the erection of an additional huge temporary but specially erected tent.
A number of entrepreneurs said the latest event has been by far the single largest exhibition held ever at the venue.
Other than Qatar, there were participants from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Iran, Italy, Germany, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Korea, Spain, Turkey, India, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Malta, The Netherlands, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, the US, and Vietnam.
The German contingent was one of the largest at the event, with more than 50 companies taking part. Meanwhile, the emerging economic powerhouse from Latin America, Brazil, made a modest beginning at Project Qatar with the participation of four companies, all dealing in a variety of stones widely used in construction.
